8:36AM - Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween, everyone. I have to work Halloween night, so I'm going to miss out on the festivities here at home, namely my wife and a friend of ours handing out candy and hosing down unsuspecting trick-or-treaters with silly string. At least I had a little Halloween fun Saturday night, when we went to our friend's house for another friend's birthday party (she donated some of her ample Halloween decor to the festivities: her birthday is October 27th, so she collects Halloween decorations the way others collect Christmas decorations). While there I carved my first pumpkin using the pirate skull pattern from Pumpkin Masters. My wife did an ordinary jack o'lantern face last weekend, but I did this one myself, whith a little help from our friend on the teeth. That clinches it, every year I'm doing a pumpkin, maybe several. Now that I know I can do it from a somewhat complicated pattern, I'm going to find the weirdest patterns I can and lighting up our front yard. I'm even thinking of trying some superhero insignia for next year.
In other news, my first issue of New Scientist just arrived in the mail, and I've already been sneaking a peak at the contents. (Thanks to sclerotic_rings for turning me onto this one). And in Wal-Mart, of all places, I picked up another gem: A Modern Library edition of the novelization of the original King Kong, with great cover art and an introduction by Greg Bear. With the Peter Jackson version coming out soon, this is going to be a banner year for the greatest of apes.
Well, that's it for now. Everyone have fun for me. I'll be at work with a couple of killjoys who hate Halloween. My only consolation will be that I get to mess with their heads by mentioning how I've always wanted to go to one of those church-sponsored Halloween events--where everyone dresses as a Biblical character--dressed as Satan. Hey, he's a Biblical character, right?
